But they did return, and in the days of Ezra, they rebuilt the temple and laid a spiritual foundation for Israel once again. The Book of Nehemiah begins 15 years after the Book of Ezra ends; almost years after the first captives came back to the Promised Land; and some years after the city of Jerusalem was destroyed. After this long time, the walls of the city of Jerusalem were still in rubble. Before this, citizens of Jerusalem had tried to rebuild the walls but had failed.
In Ezra , we see that some 75 years before they tried to rebuild the walls but were stopped by their enemies. No one thought this obstacle could be overcome, so the walls lay in ruin and the people stayed in trouble. The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. It came to pass in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the citadel, that Hanani one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.
In Shushan the citadel : Nehemiah lived in Shushan , the capital city of the Persians, and he lived in the citadel — that is, the fortified palace of the Persians. Right away, we know Nehemiah is someone important, living in the palace of the king of Persia. He wanted to know from those returning how the people and the city were doing. We might think that an important man like Nehemiah had more important things to think about than a distant city he had never been to, and a people he had mostly never met.
Yet, because his heart was for the things of God, his heart was not on himself, but on others. Nehemiah had the heart of Psalm If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill!
If I do not remember you, let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth; if I do not exalt Jerusalem above my chief joy. If Jerusalem was special to God, then it would also be special to Nehemiah. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire : The news he received was not encouraging. The people were called survivors ; this was not a hopeful title.
They were in great distress and reproach , and the walls of the city itself were broken down and the city gates are burned with fire. The bad state of the people and the bad state of the city walls were intimately connected. In the ancient world, a city without walls was a city completely open and vulnerable to its enemies.
They had no defense, no protection at all. An unwalled city was always a backwater town, with nothing valuable in it. If there were anything of value in an unwalled city, it could be stolen away easily because there was no defense to stop it. Those living in an unwalled city lived in constant stress and tension; they never knew when they might be attacked and brutalized.
Every man lived in constant fear for his wife and children. Here in America we desperately need pastors who have the vision to be able to lead their people with a Gospel-centered redemptive ministry that affects the culture. Whole families were included. There are long lists of families, and the reason they were included is that Nehemiah knew these families had to have a sense of ownership.
In fact, each family built their own part of the wall. If America is going to be spiritually rebuilt, it will not be from the top down; it will be built from the bottom up, so to speak, and families need to be rebuilt.
Egalitarian 7. Stephen's Gate, sometimes called the Lion Gate, stands. When he saw me with three armed soldiers behind me, he flung the gate open and took me on a tour of all the premises! I want you to remember that if you set out to change something in your life for the better, you have the full authority of the throne of God behind you; you may proceed with full confidence that the unseen, but very real, power of God is backing you up! Now I want to show you too!
Parents must train their children spiritually in ways that we once took for granted. It is no longer valid to expect the church to do it or society to be sympathetic to it. Parents must be involved to see their loved ones preserved and the larger culture changed.
Mar 26, - Nehemiah Chapter 4 is a beautiful story of God rebuilding ruins. All the people of God had been gathered and they began to rebuild the walls. Jan 1, - Sermon: Rebuilding from Ruins - Ezra Ezra and Nehemiah provide the biblical background, for they led a people facing far more difficult.
Nehemiah was not distracted by opposition. From the beginning of his obedience, Nehemiah faced ridicule from Sanballat, Tobiah and their sympathizers. Lies were spoken against him, and a pesky contingent opposed the fact that he was rebuilding the walls. Nehemiah took note of his enemies, but their opposition did not deter him.
Nehemiah resolved injustice and conflicts. He knew that the resolution of conflicts and injustices were necessary in order to continue rebuilding. You will never have a situation in which everything will run flawlessly, and there will nearly always be some level of conflict in any great task.
As we see both in our country, and within the church, there is frequent conflict and disagreement. The church alone has a remedy, a Person, who can bring peace to any situation.
We must bring Him to bear at every turn. Of course, it is important to acknowledge that many Christians are praying for revival in America. We want God to revive His church. In fact, things are so desperate that apart from a widespread turning to God, we will not reverse the trends in American culture.
But I fear that we want revival to do what we are unwilling to do ourselves—namely, to personally witness to our culture along the highways and byways of everyday life. We want God to come in great power to convert people, but the Bible stresses the need for personal evangelism. You cannot have one without the other. All that was created, was created by his hands with a purpose. My son was diagnosed with Autism a few years ago.
He came home at 17 months from an orphanage where he was quite neglected.
The diagnose was a surprise above his special need that we knew he had. I lay hands on him nightly and thank Jesus for bearing the stripes for his healing, but during the day I search and search for medical interventions to help him. One day we will see a restoration that will not fail. Wow this really spoke to me today. I didny realUe how much I feel like the walls of Jerusalem. Torn down, destroyed, in ruins, hopeless. I was diagnosed with breast cancer almost 2 years ago. Since then its ben surgeries, treatment, ongoing therapies to prevent reocurrance.. I know theres hope, and many have confirmed the promise of God for my life- that i will live and not die, but the battle of fear and anxiety is overwhelming some days.
This was a reminder for me that God sees as Nehemiah saw the broken down walls and will rebuild and restore me as they did the walls of Jerusalem. So glad God has encouraged you about His restoration. I had my own devastation 5 years ago. I lost my soulmate, best friend, and husband of 33 years.
We were preparing to celebrate our 29th Wedding Anniversary when 2 days before he suddenly passed away. I have been trying to cope with it by myself for years. Hiding my feelings from my kids, family and friends.
Only recently I have come to God to let Him help me rebuild my life in the way of His desire. Oops, hit send too soon It breaks my heart with you to ready this — the burden of walking through the grief and hurt alone must have been so heavy! I just prayed for you — that God would meet you and you would find comfort in Him.
